You are the average of the 5 people you spend most of your time with

Are you aware of the influence the people around you have on your future success? You are the average of the five people you spend most of your time with….Just think about that. Who do you spend your time with? Who is in your top five? Are they people that stretch you to achieve more in life? Are they people that are helping you achieve your goals? Or are they people that keep you where you are?

Why Does It Matter?

People are a huge resource that you can tap into. If you spend the majority of your time with people who don’t have aspirations and don’t live a fulfilled life, then what will that do to you? You will see this as normal.

What if you spend your time with people who are further ahead the path you want to walk? You see through them what is possible, you see through them what they have achieved and you believe it is possible. You are inspired when you are with them to live a better life.

Get In The Room

You need to make sure that you are spending time with people who have walked the path you want to walk.

Think of all the lessons, the ups and downs that can be shared with you. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. You need to be inspired and see what is possible. By surrounding yourself with these people you will see that your goals and desires are possible and achievable.

It’s really important that within your life you have real life role models, not just people you follow on social media, but actual people that you can speak with. Sometimes our ultimate role models can seem so far ahead on their journey that it can seem a bit overwhelming. But having someone in your life who you can connect with, brainstorm with, ask questions with, that is going to expedite your journey so much.

But I like My Friends…

This is not about getting rid of your friends. We all have people we love spending time with because they are just great friends. However there are many hours in the week, so it is important you stretch yourself out of your comfort zone and expand who you spend time with. And you may not realise it, but even the friends you love are probably stretching you in ways you didn’t realise. I have one great friend who doesn’t push me to being more entrepreneurial or career driven, but she does inspire me to be more relaxed, to go with the flow and stop planning! For me that is also something important that I know I need to work on. Another very close friend is always pumped up and ready for action. She is very career driven and very bold and she inspires me to be brave. She always has my back and pushes me with encouragement. These are two dear friends who still stretch me.

So What Do I Do?

Let’s find out who are in your top 5!

  1. Think about your life goals, where do you want to be, what type of person do you want to be. Write them down.
  2. Think about the people you spend most of your time with. Write down the 5 people you spend most of your time, and remember all the hours you spend with your work colleagues.
  3. Ask yourself how they impact your life, positive or negative. Think about your future goals and look at the top 5. Do they inspire you to move towards your goals? Do any of the people in your top 5 push you to be and do better. What if the people you spend most of your time with have a negative impact on you? What if when you are with them you become a person you don’t want to be?
  4. Based on step 3, decide what you want to do with your top 5. Are you happy with the list, or do you want to switch it up. If you want to make some changes, think about who you want to replace them with? Who can you connect with today that would help you get one step closer to your goals.

How to actually make the change.

You may be wondering where you start if you want to bring more inspiring people into your life. Go on LinkedI/facebook any social media platform, look at all the connections you have, what about all the people you went to school with, where are they now? The people you worked with 10 years ago? Where are they now? Go online, find a group. There are so many different groups for different areas. Join one, start interacting with people. You may not have these people in your network now, so connecting through groups / forums is a great place to start.

Most people LOVE to share, they LOVE talking about their success’s and if they see you are also on that journey sharing what they have learnt will be a great connection.

Give it a go, and let me know how it goes for you!
